Double Spirals – Sacred Geometry

This GIF by U.S. artist Ansel Bickerton is based on their ink and coloured pencil drawing “Double Spiral”.

Building from the square and circle theme, I used nested squares each with sides √2 larger than the last and angled 45º. These squares have concentric circles meeting at the corners thus no squares push through circles. I then divided my workspace radially with a binary sequence – first 2, then 4, 8, and finally 16. This creates the template for 16 spirals in each direction, giving us a total of 32 spirals. Connect the dots and voila, an amazing set of double spirals are born laying the foundation for phyllotaxy. Ink, colored pencil 22″x22″
