UK £1 golden coin is history

Today is the day the familiar “sound round pound” coins of the UK are demonetised (taken out of circulation) to be replaced by a new super secure bimetallic version. The £1 coin first came into circulation in 1983, when it replaced an earlier pound note. These coins are made from copper, zinc and nickel, but before their replacement, were often counterfeited.

I managed to save one pound coin as a souvenir, which now sits in my drawer at work.

Shakespeare 400

Today is the 400th death anniversary of one of the UK’s most formidable and influential playwrights, William Shakespeare, who died at the age of 52 on the 23rd April 1616. One of my more enduring memories of studying Shakespeare’s plays was playing a guard in a school drama production of Macbeth.

Fore-edge painting

A fore-edge painting is a scene painted on the edges of the pages of a book. There are two basic forms, including paintings on edges that have been fanned and edges that are closed; thus with the first instance a book edge must be fanned to see the painting and in the second the painting is on the closed edge itself and thus should not be fanned. A fanned painting is one that is not visible when the book is closed.

The earliest fore-edge paintings date possibly as far back as the 10th century; these earliest paintings were symbolic designs. Early English fore-edge paintings, believed to date to the 14th century, presented heraldic designs in gold and other colours.
