#30YearsofGIFs – 8

In the earliest days of the net, GIFs and JPGs for different aspects of this brave new world often made reference to pre-existing technologies and objects. For example, the above GIF shows two letterboxes for email, a virtual reinterpretation of the traditional door flap for letters and parcels. This analogy helped people be more comfortable with the new technology by relating it to things they were already familiar with IRL.

Vijay, dive in and celebrate summer

Ironically, it is in summer, especially when it’s really hot, that my appetite sometimes takes a hit. I mean, when the thermometer is a tall red line, close to bursting, it’s just too stuffy to really eat a meal. Dinner becomes a mere side salad above a snack. GIF from a Sainsbury’s supermarket email, sent earlier this July.

Mr Shah, ideas for your next holiday adventure

86 per cent of millennials like to immerse themselves in a new culture while on holiday. Of course, we’re usually open minded, willing to try new things and experiences, and why would you travel halfway across the world, just to eat the same food you eat at home and hover around a pool all day. Go out, expand your horizons. This GIF came courtesy of Lloyds Bank in a email sent in June 2017.

Mr Shah, keep track of your spending

The MetroCentre in Gateshead, north England is the UK’s (and Europe’s) biggest shopping centre. I got this GIF from my bank’s email about new text alerts that tell you when you’ve blown too much dough on the shopping extravaganza. Luckily, I’m not much of a shopaholic.
